Launch of the Dot-radio by the EBU

This is official, and it’s a world first : the Dot-radio extension intended to cover the sector of the 65,000 terrestrial and 60,000 web radios around the world will be premiered at the European Radio Show in Paris from 29 to 31 Juanary 2017. Responsibility for administering the domain name extension was delegated to the EBU by the top domain name regulatory authority, ICANN, on 21 July 2016.

In an approach demonstrating complete inclusiveness towards Europe, the official announcement by the EBU of the Dot-radio extension makes the Radio Show 2017 a key fixture for the global industry in this medium. The Dot-radio extension is in fact one of the rare TLD (Top Level Domain name) communities recognized as being representative of a cultural sector.

There are many domain name extensions, of which there are several different types. Firstly, the standard .com, .club or .cloud, which are generic and can be purchased by whoever wants them without any restrictions. Then there are the country code domain name extensions, which are often governed by the laws of these countries in terms of allocation, such as .tv, .fr or.ch.
There are also brand-name extensions used exclusively by users of the same name, such as .ibm or .eurovision. Then you have geographic and cultural domain name extensions, like the recent .paris. Finally, there are sector-based extensions, such as .radio, .bank or .pharmacy, complying with the rules and regulations of an economic sector or a cultural or linguistic community.

First-Come, Last-Come, everyone served ?

When requesting a Dot-radio domain name during the start-up period, priority criteria and rules will apply in order to optimize the allocation of domain names and to handle the competing requests efficiently and imaginatively. Several different applicants could end up applying for the same domain name. The governance and procedural approach of the launch period will be approved by an advisory board made up of the leading international radio organizations.
You may request an extension that reflects the identity of your station, but certainly not the extension of another radio that already exists. If certain radios have the same name and apply for the same extension, the following rule of priority will apply: first, terrestrial radio stations, then web radios and radio professionals”, says Alain Artero, the EBU’s dot-radio extension supremo.
So, the initial launch period is the best time to secure the extension. At the conclusion of the launch period, rules of General Availability will apply. The same rules will be applied to reserve access to the new dot-radio extension for the radio sector, but without the effort to optimize and prioritize the allocation of domain names.

A summit meeting and a conference

All of the 14 organizations on the advisory board are invited to the European Radio Show of 30 January 2017 for an internal meeting at the very heart of the radio industry, gathered together at the Grande Halle de la Villette for 3 days. A conference explaining everything there is to know about Dot-radio will be held at 3pm on Sunday 29 January 2017 on the Agora.
